Kids of Character

Here at Rainbow Child Care Centers we think that it is important to develop the whole child. Every month we focus on one character trait that we feel will help the children grow into competent members of society through our Kids of Character program.

During the month of November our focus is on generosity.

Children are naturally egocentric, which makes it all the more important to expose them to the concepts of sharing and being generous early. Forcing a child to give to others will not teach them to be generous; you instead want to invite them to be a part of it. When children act in a generous manner, it is more beneficial to acknowledge and praise them than to reward them.

At home, you can help teach your child generosity by:

  • Discuss other people’s wants and needs to help children grasp a bigger concept of the world.
  • Encourage your child to find toys and clothes that they no longer want, need or use and have them help get the items ready to donate. By involving your child in the process, you are helping them to understand the importance of being generous and helping others in need.
  • Find a way for your family to work together for a cause. Have a jar where everyone collects their change and have children count it and watch you write a check to a local cause. Talk about how your change adds up to help someone in need.

You child learns best by watching you and participating! So, remember to take advantage of all the opportunities you encounter to be generous, especially as we move into the holiday season!
