Communicating with our children is one of the most important ways we can support their learning, confidence and our love for them. They gain such valuable information from a conversation, whether they are 6 weeks or 6 years, so what better time to communicate than with a good book. March is Reading Month, so there is no better time to celebrate reading than now! No matter your child’s age, they can appreciate books. Looking at pictures, rereading a favorite story or having a discussion about a book can open up many interests, and is wonderful bonding time for you and your child.
According to readaloud.org, research shows that reading aloud with children is the single most important thing you can do to prepare a child for reading and learning. The National Campaign called “Read Aloud 15 MINUTES” encourages parents to read aloud to their children at least 15 minutes every day starting at birth. They have a wonderful list of 15 tips for reading aloud to babies and toddlers found here. Many of these tips are about ways to make reading fun for all!
Children of all ages love a good book. Reading to children from early on in their lives inspires them to keep finding good books as they grow. Reading, and being read to, stimulates brain development and promotes early language skills.
