Preparing your Child for Kindergarten Readiness

Rainbow Child Care Center understands the importance of preparing children for kindergarten readiness.  Our program, inspired by The Creative Curriculum®, is purposefully constructed to provide children with a variety of academic experiences promoting problem-solving abilities, persistence and a passion for lifelong learning.  In addition to the use of The Creative Curriculum®, Rainbow Child Care Center has created exclusive educational materials to help children achieve school readiness.

Home Connection:  The home connection is exclusive to Rainbow Child Care Center’s Pre-K Academy program. Parents will receive a packet along with access to our online portal. Both the parent packet and portal provide insight to the developmental milestones your Pre-K Academy student is working towards, along with daily activities to promote developmental growth at home. https://rainbowccc.com/pre-kacademy/

Sight Word Cards:  Sight words are words that children will know simply by seeing them. They don’t have to sound them out. Many sight words are difficult to sound out because they don’t follow typical sound patterns of the English language (the, of, said).  Learning these words helps children to become more confident and fluent readers. Teachers use Rainbow Child Care Center’s Sight Word Cards along with games and multi-sensory learning activities to help new readers learn these often tricky words, so they are confident going into kindergarten.

Vocabulary Cards: As you watch your child grow, you probably realize they are learning new words at a very fast rate. They are able to connect pictures they see to physical objects in their world, and they are also becoming familiar with sound patterns, allowing them to sound out new words. At Rainbow Child Care Center, we are using Picture Vocabulary Cards to promote and improve children’s early literacy skills. Each vocabulary card has an image, the corresponding English term, and the Spanish term.  The images on vocabulary cards provide a clue that reinforces the new written words children are learning and connects the new word to a real-life object or concept, creating a meaningful learning experience. We combine vocabulary cards with hands-on classroom activities that engage children’s senses, so they have the best possible chance for success as an early reader.

Journal: Watching your child’s ability to draw and write improve over time is very exciting as a parent! You’ll notice lines on the paper become more controlled, and before you know it; your child is writing and drawing pictures and words you can easily decipher. At Rainbow Child Care Center, we believe in combining classroom activities that promote fine-motor skills and muscle strengthening and control. We offer practice writing and drawing through journals. Journals are a great way to practice pencil grip, and our creative open-ended prompts allow children to use their imagination as young authors.

Norm Referencing Assessment: In order to assess children’s readiness for educational experiences at Rainbow Child Care Center, we use a Norm-Referenced Screening Tool. The Norm-Referenced Screening Tool allows us to compare children’s development to that of other children their age. This shows us what children know as individuals as well as a group, and helps us develop unique lesson plans to create growth where it is needed the most.

Estimation Jar:  Watching your child’s ability to make educated and reasonable guesses based on size, quantity, distance, and space available develop over time is very exciting as a parent. As children practice and develop the skills, you’ll notice their ability to reasonably estimate and their ability to accurately count objects to check their estimate flourish.
