Tips for Traveling with Young Children

Summer is here and that means it’s time to travel! Traveling can be a tricky thing to do with young children; some may even avoid the idea all together! Traveling doesn’t have to be feared, get out there, explore and make family memories!

There are many things you can do as a parent of a young child to help minimize the stress of traveling. Plan ahead for everything that could potentially happen; hunger, cold, bored… cover all of your bases!

Pack healthy snacks that are easy to eat in a car; avoid the messy, sticky and sugary foods. When packing children toys think about toys the child can play with in the car or think about creating specific busy bags, travel binders and other specific traveling car activities.  world

If traveling by plane, know the rules! Be sure to check over what you can and cannot bring on the plane, and pack accordingly. During take-off and landing make sure to have a kid’s drink or chewing gum, and talk about what is happening. Pack a carry on for your child with enough activities to keep them busy throughout the length of the trip. Take toys that are quiet so you are not disturbing others around you, pack things like; coloring books, books, stickers, etc.

If traveling to an unfamiliar place, show your child pictures of where you are going and who you are seeing. Prepare them for what they will be doing on this trip, involve them in packing their bags, and talk to them so they understand what is expected.
